En Plein Air: Another pondering. Even with all the lit grasses in lower part of the painting I felt the eye was still held by the house. So I softened the detailing of the siding and slightly greyed part of the yellow by glazing with light blue. Later I added the mauve to the upper portion of the wallto encourage the eye to move down. I also felt the third window kept your attention too much. I tried darkening it but in the end, decided to cover it with tree branches! After working at a few other bits and pieces, I signed it! En Plein Air At The Old Creamery, Salt Spring Island

This summer on Salt Spring Island, I was fortunate to paint en plein air a few times with my Mum and Dad. I keep saying it but really, there’s nothing like painting on location for a rewarding experience, both in life and in technical and skills learning. So what did I learn this time? Before

When All Else Fails, Crop!

A couple of blogs ago, I gave you the step-by-step progression of the pastel I did in Budapest. The painting wasn’t completed and I promised to share the finishing process with you. Well I finally got back to it on Sunday…then again on Monday. Hmmmmm. Every time I worked on it, I thought, Ah yes,

1. I had taken a few photos of the fountain at Vigado Square in Budapest. Two girls were enjoying the day and having a chat. In these thumbnails, I was working out what composition to choose - looking at all my options.

Budapest Pastel And A Lesson Learnt

We leave Budapest in a few hours. It’s been an amazing stay of almost three weeks – the city is more than I hoped or expected. But I did learn a lesson and that is, you can’t do everything! I had planned on finishing up my online project as well as seeing the city. I had

Still Life Demo at Peninsula Gallery

Saturday past I was set up at Peninsula Gallery, in Sidney, BC for an ‘art encounter.’ From 1-4pm I worked on a still life set up in front of me. It was fun and although it wasn’t busy (the good part of that was that I got to get some work done!), I had some

Plein Air Pastel Of Big Rideau Lake

I’m home from my wonderful trip to Ontario where Cam and I visited various family members. Kicking myself for not taking more photos! However, I did have time to do one pastel en plein air 🙂 It’s one that I did of a beautiful view of Big Rideau Lake from Cam’s Mum’s porch. The weather

Demos At IAPS In The Schmincke Pastels Booth

At the beginning of June, as you know, I was at the wonderful bi-annual International Association of Pastel Societies (IAPS) Convention. I was fortunate to be asked to demo twice using Schmincke pastels at their booth. What to paint? Well, if you know me, you know I prefer working from life, so the first demo

Using White Paper For Pastelling

I have done a few pastel demo videos now, all of them on toned Wallis paper. A question I’ve been asked is, Why don’t you use white paper? and What would the pastel painting look like on white paper? I have taken these questions to heart and decided to do a demo on white paper even

Experimenting with Canson Touch and Richard Diebenkorn

It’s been a while since I really got into pastel work and rather than jump into a serious piece, I thought, Hmmmm, good idea to PLAY first. Since I’ve been itching to try out Canson Touch and since I now had a sheet of it – colour ‘Sand’ – I thought I’d play on that. I

A Lesson From A Plein Air Pastel Painted In La Manzanilla

Hola hola!! Well I’m home from Mexico where I had a glorious time, first with my sweetheart Cam for a couple of weeks then with my lovely niece Aly for a week. Have to say it’s taken me some time to get back to this reality. I did this plein air pastel while in La
