A Creative Pause at the Start of the Year

There’s a particular kind of pressure that shows up right at the start of a new year — especially for artists. This studio musing is a creative pause, an invitation to slow down before the rush to plan, produce, and prove begins.

If you had a good year with your art, it whispers:
“Don’t lose momentum. Keep going. Make the most of this. Don’t stop”

If it was a harder year, it mutters:
“You should have done more. You can do better. This year will be different… right?”

Either way, here we are — standing at the beginning of something new — and it can feel surprisingly noisy. And uncomfortable.

So here’s my gentle nudge.

Not just yet.

This is not the moment to judge your year in paintings finished or goals ticked off.
Not the moment to replay and replay what stalled or didn’t quite land.
And not the moment to pressure yourself into becoming a “better” artist by the end of next week!
This is a moment to pause. A creative pause — before intentions, goals, or resolutions take over.

❤️To ease back into your days.
💜To gently notice what you’re curious about.
🧡To potter, doodle, read, walk, nap — or do absolutely nothing at all.

Your art doesn’t need you to prove anything right now.

You don’t need a banner year behind you to deserve rest.
You don’t need a clear plan ahead to be allowed to begin gently.

Because here’s something artists forget far too easily:

👉 Your worth is not measured in output.
👉 Your creativity is not on a schedule.
👉 And one calendar year doesn’t get to define you as an artist.

You show up. You care. You keep returning to the studio— even when it’s messy or slow.
That counts for more than you think.

There will be plenty of time for intention and direction soon enough.

But this threshold moment — this creative pause — is for being, not becoming.

Wishing you a calm, spacious start to the year.

Warmly,
~ Gail

PS. If this beginning feels tender, uncertain, or simply different— be kind to yourself. 💛

  1. I love this so much; I have finally gotten to this place of ‘rest’ in January but had not put it into words; so THANK YOU!!!
I told myself last year “just know that every January from here on out you are going to rest, to chill, to do puzzles or nothing but you are not going to pressure your self to finish anything, just play and think about what you want to happen possibly in the upcoming year, do some reflection , playing and planning. And a lot of hiking with your dogs!”
So I am cooking new recipes, walking the dogs on new hikes, exploring the area I live in, driving down country roads I have never been down, buying new art supplies for when…joined a new winery, spending time with friends over a meal and not counting the day’s but savoring them.
    Thanks again!

    1. Carol, oh Carol, i LOVE this January idea. I am sure your comment will be a big inspiration to others. Such wonderful “permission” to play and enjoy. And I am so glad to hear you are doing just that!! 🙌 All of that passion for life will recharge and refresh you and it will all mean something for your art as you go deeper into the year!! Yay you!!
