Corey Pitkin – Portraiture In The Time Of COVID

I love figurative work! And one figurative artist whose work I admire is Corey Pitkin. I’ve featured his work twice in my monthly roundups. The first time was with Summer Solstice in September 2016 and the second was with The Golden Apple in February 2019. One of the things I love about Pitkin’s work is

Gareth Jones – Unlocking Potential Through Pastels

Gareth Jones was one of those artists whose pastels snuck up on me – one day I noticed that they were there! Little did I know that he hadn’t been using pastels for all that long. Certainly, you can’t tell this from his work which feels as if it’s produced by someone comfortable with using

From Sketch to Painting – Using A Life Drawing

So this whole idea of going from sketch to painting started with a frame. I was visiting Peninsula Gallery to review my painting inventory as they were in the process of reopening the gallery (after being closed for COVID-19).  Then Vivian, Manager of Peninsula Gallery, suggested I do a nude painting for the frame. And

Alan Flattmann, Paris Café by the Seine, 2020, pastel, 24 x 30 in. Available.

Alan Flattmann – A Sense of Place

Alan Flattmann is one of those pastel artists whose work I’ve known since the days I really started to get into soft pastels. I included one of his evocative New Orleans paintings in one of my early roundup blogs. He always appeared to be a humble and unassuming artist despite being a highly accomplished one.

Using Art To Respond To Social Crisis

Using Art To Respond To Social Crisis

I don’t know about you but I’ve been feeling overwhelmed by the crises we are currently facing in the world – the COVID-19 pandemic and the more recent revelation (again!) of racism, in this instance against black people, as seen in the context of police brutality. We’ve all been appalled by the dispassionate killing of

Life Drawing Virtually – So No Excuses!

Okay, I know you were expecting a guest blog post but life has a way of turning things upside down when you least expect it! Suddenly, we had to postpone the post but not to worry, it will appear later this year. Yay!! In the meantime, it was a bit of a scramble to ‘figure’

Action is the antidote: A wee break and when I came back, I could see that the light patches with darker purples surrounding them gave a feeling of sunlight coming through even though the light was showing cool. As it was this coolness of an overcast day that was the main attraction, something that made the distant light patches stand out, I wanted to make sure we could feel it wasn't a sunny day but rather, a bright overcast one. And I could fuss this to death so time to call it quits!! Gail Sibley, The Light in the Distance, Unison Colour pastels on UART 320 grade paper, 6 x 9 in.

Action Is The Antidote To What Ails You!

I don’t know about you but for the past few days, weeks even, I’ve been feeling a bit listless, a bit blah, a bit draggy. Sure I have work to keep me occupied, for instance, the work I need to do preparing classes, critiques, and demos for my IGNITE! membership, and the work I’ve been

Making A Statement With Your Art

Sometimes you may have the feeling that you’d like to make a statement with your art, something about the times you’re living in (like the time of the COVID-19 pandemic!), or some specific event, or some political issue. But you don’t necessarily feel comfortable making an overt statement or perhaps you just don’t know how
