Curious about working en plein air but also a bit overwhelmed by the thought of painting on location? Or you’ve painted outside but not had a satisfying experience? Well truly, there’s just nothing like painting outdoors, that time when you’re painting surrounded by everything that’s in the environment at that moment – the sensations of smells, sounds, feelings, and the visual stimuli of light and colour. It’s an event that will be recalled years later when you see your painting. This workshop will give you the tools to have an enriching experience painting en plein air.

We’ll cover everything you need to know about painting on location including composition and what it takes to make a good one; simplifying forms and shapes; understanding and working with values; looking at colour relationships, temperatures, and harmonies; accurate drawing and perspective; the importance of hard and soft edges; and last but not at all least, creating a painting with emotional impact and intention.

I will demonstrate each day and will advise participants one-on-one as you work through the day. We’ll also make sure to have time for a group critique at the end of each day. And it’s imperative that we all have fun and take the opportunity to explore and be encouraged by others.

Open to artists of all skill levels but must have some acquaintance with using pastels.

Event: ICAN Pastel Conference 30 May – 3 June 2016

Location: Aurora Cultural Centre, Aurora, Ontario, Canada

Often we feel we need a whole heap of pastels to make a successful painting. Certainly it’s wonderful to have a large selection to choose from but what happens when you’re painting en plein air, or travelling, or trying out a new brand’s starter box? Is it possible to create using only a small number of pastels? In this workshop, we’ll do various exercises to see the possibilities and potential in the limited palette we have. We’ll look into the idea of values and how understanding values can override the need to have the exact colour. And in the end, we’ll create a painting of a simple still life set up (one or two fruits/veg) with this limited palette.
